Rotarians, State Bank of India and Unipads Foundation launched Project Shakti, an initiative to distribute reusable sanitary pads to 60,000 female students across Telangana. The project with a total expenditure of ₹ 2.5 crore was inaugurated at Veeranari Chakali Ilamma Women’s University in Koti by Hyderabad District Collector Hari Chandana Dasari on Monday.
As part of the inaugural distribution, the Collector handed over 7,000 reusable sanitary napkin sets worth ₹ 35 lakh to the students of the university. A larger distribution covering 60,000 students in multiple districts is expected to be completed by March.
Each set of reusable sanitary napkins contains three pads and is designed to last 12 to 16 months with proper care. “Life expectancy depends on fabric quality, frequency of use and appropriate washing and drying. Well-maintained pads remain effective and comfortable for multiple menstrual cycles, offering a sustainable alternative to disposables,” the report said.
Addressing the gathering, the Collector urged students to become “menstruation independent” and stressed the importance of control, choice and dignity in matters related to menstruation, without shame or dependence. She explained that reusable sanitary napkins are cost-effective, environmentally friendly, washable and gentle on the body. By reducing waste and minimizing irritation, they contribute to long-term menstrual dignity.
She reminded the students that the Supreme Court of India has recognized menstrual hygiene as an integral part of the right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution.
