The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) has initiated official action after receiving numerous complaints of drinking water being sold at exorbitant prices during the fifth T20I between India and New Zealand on January 31 in Thiruvananthapuram.
The association said in a press release that after the videos and posts shared on social networks showed viewers charged above the permitted rates in certain parts of the Greenfield International Stadium. KCA stressed that extensive measures were put in place to ensure a smooth and comfortable experience for fans, and any deviations from the approved guidelines were viewed with concern.
According to the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s agreement with the official beverage sponsor for international matches, the prices have been clearly fixed at Rs 10 for 200 ml of bottled drinking water and Rs 50 for 250 ml of energy drinks or juices. The contracting agency was instructed to prominently display these rates on all kiosks, maintain adequate stock in line with the expected crowd and strictly follow the “Green Protocol” to ensure environmentally friendly operation of the venue.
However, reports suggested that higher prices were being charged for some seats inside the stadium, prompting immediate action by the association. Based on the complaints received, the KCA formally notified the BCCI, who assured that appropriate action would be taken in the matter.
India beat New Zealand by 46 runs
The association further stated that it will thoroughly investigate any misconduct on the part of the contracting agency and expressed its sincere regret for the inconvenience caused to the viewers. The KCA added that strict precautionary measures will be in place to ensure that similar incidents do not recur during future matches at the venue.
Meanwhile, India beat New Zealand by 46 runs in the fifth T20I to clinch the series 4-1. Ishan Kishan was declared the man of the match for scoring his first T20I hundred. He played a breathtaking innings of 103 (43) with six fours and ten sixes to help India post 271/5 in their allotted 20 overs.
In reply, New Zealand posted 225 in 19.4 overs as Arshdeep Singh scalped his first five-wicket haul to record figures of 5/51 in four overs.
