The Karnataka State Government Employees Association has urged the state government to introduce a law to protect employees from attacks by members of the general public.

Association president CS Shadakshari told reporters in Gadag on Sunday that they have urged the state government to pass a strict law with provisions to impose a fine of ₹50,000 and a three-year jail term to prevent attacks and atrocities on government employees.

More than 2.73 lakh government posts are vacant in the state. Employees work under enormous pressure. However, abuses and attacks on government employees are increasing, he said.

Discussions were held with the chief secretaries of the government to formulate a strong law to protect employees from such attacks, he said.

He said they had high hopes that the state government would revert to the old Pension Scheme (OPS) for employees.

“We have told the state government that no other decision will be taken. We will hold a statewide convention in support of it,” he said.

“The Congress government has also mentioned the issue in its election manifesto and the chief minister has also been asked to bring it before the government,” he said.

He said it is inappropriate to make the TET exam mandatory for teachers who have been serving for many years. The association filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against this order and senior lawyers were approached to argue on behalf of the employees.

He said the state association will bear all costs of this legal battle.

Steps are being taken to increase the list of existing 222 hospitals to 400 to provide better treatment to the employees under the Karnataka Arogya Sanjeevini Scheme.

He said discussions were being held with experts to resolve the technical glitches found in the scheme.

Earlier, he addressed the association’s state executive committee meeting at the city’s Chief Minister Bhimsen Joshi Bhavan.

Gadag district unit president Basavaraj Bellary, former association president Ravi Gunjikar, officials present DS Talawara, Siddappa Lingadala, MM Nittali, Raju Kantigonnavara, Muthu Mallashetty, state association officials, district and taluk level officials.
