The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) central leadership has asked all its legislators as well as alliance partners from Manipur to be present in Delhi on Monday (February 2, 2026) for a crucial meeting.
Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) from the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities headed to New Delhi to attend the meeting, two MLAs confirmed to The Hindu. One of the MLAs said they were called by Sambit Patra, BJP in-charge of Manipur, to be present in the capital on February 2 by 2 pm.

Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh told The Hindu that he was on his way to Delhi to attend a meeting with the central leadership.
According to a PTI report, Manipur BJP president Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi told reporters at the Imphal airport, “All NDA legislators have been called. We hope and believe that a people’s government will be formed.”
Alliance partners — National People’s Party (NPP) and Naga People’s Front (NPF) leaders are also likely to attend the meeting on Monday (February 2, 2026).
Amid the call for a meeting, security forces deployed in the ethnically strife-torn northeastern state have been told they require additional forces to handle any law and order situation that may arise in the next few days.
The President’s rule in Manipur will end on February 13 and over the past month, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has held several meetings to explore the possibility of restoring a people’s rule in Manipur.

The Manipur assembly was suspended on 13 February 2025 following the resignation of former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. President’s rule, initially imposed for a period of six months, was extended for another six months on 19 August 2025 after approval by Parliament.
Government sources said talks are underway with Meitei, Kuki-Zo and Naga MLAs to form a government with the participation of all the three communities.
The Kuki Zo Council (KZC), a conglomerate of civil society organizations of the Kuki-Zo-Hmar tribal community, opposed the MLAs joining the People’s Government in Manipur until the demands for a self-governing Union Territory with a Legislative Assembly were met.
Meitei civil society groups opposed any changes to the territorial integrity of the state.
On January 2 and 5, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Home Minister Govind Mohan chaired two meetings on security clearance.

On January 16, Mr Shah met Mr Singh in New Delhi, where talks focused on an “enabling environment” and “ironing out complexities” before people’s rule can be restored in the northeastern state.
Ethnic violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo people in Manipur on 3 May 2023, claiming more than 250 lives so far.
