Novak Djokovic’s emotional tribute to Rafael Nadal stole the show at the 2026 Australian Open following his four-set loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s final at Rod Laver Arena. Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam champion, was taking part in the tournament for the first time since his retirement in 2024, sitting alongside fellow ATP No.1s Marat Safin and John McEnroe.
Djokovic singled out Nadal in his post-match speech, expressing the honor of sharing the court with the Spanish legend and acknowledging the inspiration Nadal has provided throughout his career. The Serbian champion contemplated the challenge of competing with rising stars like Alcaraz while also facing the pressure of living up to the past.
Australian Open Final, Carlos Alcaraz vs Novak Djokovic Highlights
“Then I have to talk to the legendary Rafa in the stands. Obviously, it’s strange to see you there (in the stands) and not here (on the court). It was an honor to share the court with you. Too many Spanish legends, I felt like I was playing 2 against 1 in this match,” Djokovic said at the ceremony.
“Over the years, I’ve tried to give it back with good tennis. I always believe in myself, that’s something, I believe it’s really needed. Especially when you’re playing against the quality of Carlos and Jannik. Honestly, I didn’t think I’d ever stand at a Grand Slam ceremony again. So I have to thank you for pushing me on my way,” added Djokovic.
HOW DOJOKOVIC FAILED IN THE FINAL
Novak Djokovic faced disappointment on Sunday Carlos Alcaraz beat him 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5he became the youngest player to complete a career Grand Slam at 22 years and 272 days.
Djokovic opened the men’s singles final with authority, taking the first set 6-2. The 10-time Australian Open champion was clinical on serve, winning 93% of his first-serve points while keeping unforced errors to a minimum. Alcaraz, despite hitting 10 winners, struggled with nine unforced errors and couldn’t find a rhythm.
Djokovic broke the Spaniard’s serve early to take a 3-1 lead and kept the pressure on with deep, accurate groundstrokes, punctuated by sharp volleys and shots. His experience showed as he anticipated Alcaraz’s aggressive returns and countered effectively.
However, the pace shifted from the second set. Alcaraz began to read Djokovic’s serve better, increasing the tempo of his shots and forcing crucial errors. Despite Djokovic’s initial dominance, he was unable to sustain it and ultimately failed, allowing Alcaraz to make history.
