A section of Rajiv Gandhi Salai near the Indira Nagar U Turn flyover has been closed since Saturday morning following a submerged sewer pipe below.
Sources in the Roads Department said their patrol vehicle noticed a ripple in the road on Friday evening and the area next to the on-ramp of the flyover from the Tidel Park side was barricaded to ensure the safety of motorists. On Saturday morning, while digging up the road, a leak was found on sewer line 2.2 due to a collapsed pipe.
Chennai Metrowater was currently undergoing repairs. Because of this, traffic at Rajiv Gandhi Salai was slow throughout the day as one lane was not available for motorists for a stretch of about 50 feet. Repairs should be completed by Sunday.
A former highway engineer said this was the fourth time that different places on Rajiv Gandhi Salai had sunk due to the same sewer line. “Efforts must be made to replace the line and the capacity of the petrol station should be increased to avoid such incidents in future. The line from Madhya Kailas temple to IIT Madras and also the line near the Madhya Kailash flyover must be changed to prevent leakages,” he added.
