Lionel Messi will be on the bench for Argentina’s final group stage match against Jordan

Argentina captain Lionel Messi will be on the bench for Saturday’s World Cup Group J clash against Jordan, with coach Lionel Scaloni opting to leave out his star striker after the defending champions sealed qualification for the knockout stages.

Messi was in sensational form as he scored all five of Argentina’s goals in victories over Algeria and Austria to help his side secure top spot in Group J with a margin.

Ahead of the game, Scaloni confirmed that the Inter Miami star would not be in the starting XI, but is expected to feature later in the game.

“Leo will start on the bench,” Scaloni said.

“Leo will come a little later,” he added.

SERVANT ROTATION

Scaloni refused Argentina would field a weakened side and insist that every player in the squad has earned the opportunity to represent the reigning world champions.

“Those who play tomorrow deserve to play, they are part of the team,” Scaloni said.

“All the effort we put into practice is because of them. They give their best when they’re not playing.”

The Argentina coach added that his aim is to ensure that the team maintains the same level regardless of personnel.

“The dream as a coach is to have the team perform at the same level, regardless of the players that make up the team.”

“If you’re wearing the jersey and you’re playing, it doesn’t matter if the game is important for points or not. You’re going to do your best to win.”

THE JORDAN TEST

Although Jordan is already out after back-to-back defeats in his first World Cup campaign, Scaloni expects a disciplined one challenge from the Asian side.

He said Jordan were likely to line up with five backs and warned Argentina may have to adjust tactics if they struggle to break them down.

“Jordan normally plays with five defenders and we are open to the possibility that if we face any difficulties we may have to play a little differently,” Scaloni said.

Argentina will be looking to complete a perfect campaign in the group stage before turning their attention to the round of 32, while Jordan will be hoping to end their historic first appearance at the World Cup on a positive note.
