
The Kollam Vigilance Court on Saturday sentenced a former police sub-inspector to seven years in jail and imposed a fine of ₹20,000 in a 2015 bribery case.
Accused R. Mohanan was found guilty of accepting bribe when he was lodged in Chathannur police station. The court found that Mohanan had demanded and received ₹2,000 from the complainant to facilitate the release of the two-wheeler involved in the road accident and provided a copy of the first information report of the case.
The legal proceedings were initiated after the then Deputy Superintendent of Police of the Kollam unit, B. Radhakrishna Pillai, registered an FIR and started an investigation. The case was further investigated by DySP Aji VS and Jeeji N. before DySP Ashok Kumar laid the final charge sheet. After a trial before the Investigating Commissioner and Special Magistrate (Vigilance) in Kollam, the verdict was delivered this Saturday confirming the charges against the former officer. The court imposed three years’ imprisonment and a fine of ₹10,000 under Section 7, in addition four years’ imprisonment and a further fine of ₹10,000 under Section 13(1)(a). d) r/w 13 para 2. While the cumulative sentence is seven years, the accused may serve the sentence concurrently. After the verdict was pronounced, the accused was taken into custody and lodged in Poojappura Central Jail, Thiruvananthapuram.
