A 23-year-old man was killed after a sand-laden truck collided with another truck at Kothur village near Jolarpet town in Tirupattur on Friday.
The deceased was identified as K. Ellumalai, a resident of Kothur village in Tirupattur. Initial investigation revealed that S. Vijay, 25, a native of Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh, was running a private transport service in the area for the past few years. He allegedly supplied illicit sand and mud to brick kilns in Tirupattur, Vellore and Krishnagiri districts.
Police said Vijay had roped in two trucks to transport sand from Chittoor to brick kilns around Jolarpet and Natrampalli towns in Tirupattur district. Hence, the Ellumalai truck driver was on his way to load illegal sand in Chittoor, while another driver, B. Arun, 27, was driving the truck to the brick kilns in Tirupattur. Ellumalai lost control of the vehicle and rammed into an oncoming truck.
Ellumalai was badly injured in the impact and Arun escaped unhurt. Passers-by and other motorists admitted the injured driver to the Government Medical College Hospital in Krishnagiri district, where doctors declared him brought dead.
A case has been registered by Natrampalli police. The two trucks involved in the accident were impounded. The truck owner Vijay and the driver Arun were arrested. A probe is underway.
