The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Telangana police has for the first time summoned former Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao to appear before it and record his statement for investigation in the wiretapping case. The allegations were made during the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) regime, sources quoted by news agency PTI said.
To deliver the notice, some SIT officials visited KCR’s residence at Nandi Nagar in Banjara Hills. He was served with a notice under CrPC 160. The SIT has already recorded the statement of his son KT Rama Rao and nephews T Harish Rao and Joginipalla Santosh Kumar.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has asked KCR, as Rao is addressed, to appear here on January 30.
The SIT informed Chandrasekhar Rao through a notice that due to his age above 65 years, Section 160 of the Penal Code allows him to appear at the Jubilee Hills Police Station or suggest any other place in Hyderabad suitable for questioning.
Earlier, BRS working president and KCR’s son KT Rama Rao as well as senior party MLA T Harish Rao had appeared before the SIT on January 23 and January 20 in connection with the same case.
Besides, some other BRS leaders were among those summoned and questioned by the SIT recently.
About the case
The wiretapping case is linked to allegations of widespread unauthorized and illegal telephone surveillance and tapping. The case involved politicians, businessmen, journalists, members of the judiciary and prominent personalities, the police said.
Former Telangana Intelligence chief T Prabhakar Rao, the prime accused in the case, was earlier questioned by the SIT.
The suspended DSP of the Telangana Special Intelligence Bureau (SIB) was among four police officials arrested by the Hyderabad police since March 2024 for allegedly deleting intelligence from various electronic devices and also for allegedly tapping phones during the previous BRS regime. They were subsequently granted bail.
