According to reports received from the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC), only two confirmed cases of Nipah virus disease have been reported from West Bengal since December last year (2025) till date, said a report issued by the health department on Tuesday (January 27, 2026).
Following the confirmation of these two cases, the Central Government in coordination with the Government of West Bengal initiated comprehensive public health measures in accordance with established protocols.
A total of 196 contacts associated with confirmed cases have been identified, traced, monitored and tested. All traced contacts were found to be asymptomatic and tested negative for Nipah virus disease. Enhanced surveillance, laboratory testing and field investigations have been carried out through coordinated efforts by central and state health agencies to ensure early containment of cases, the release noted.
He added that no other cases have been identified so far.
“The situation is constantly being monitored and all necessary public health measures are in place,” the ministry said.
