Chamarajanagar district police have arrested five persons, including the parents of a newborn baby girl sold for ₹50,000 to a couple in Arakalgud taluk of Hassan district.
The baby girl was born at Chamarajanagar District Hospital on July 26, 2025 to Sindhu and Manjunayak of Ramasamudra in Chamarajanagar.
A complaint was lodged at the Chamarajanagar Town Police Station on 15 September 2025 when the head of the Chamarajanagar Child Development Project noticed that the newborn girl was not in the care of her parents.
The police registered the case and started investigating the matter.
The child’s parents, who had been on the run for about six months, were traced using technical and scientific investigative methods, police said.
When taken into custody and questioned on 23 January 2026, the parents – Manjunayak and Sindhu – revealed that they had sold the child for ₹50,000 through a Group D employee at Cheluvamba Hospital in Mysuru to a couple identified as Javaraiah and Netra, residents of Konnanuru village in Arakalgud tal.
The police found the six-month-old baby in the care of Javaraiah and Netra. The child was rescued and turned over to the Child Development Unit. “The child is healthy and doing well,” Chamarajanagar district police said in a statement.
The middleman from Cheluvamba Hospital in Mysuru, Shantha, the child’s parents Manjunayak and Sindhu and the buyers Javaraiah and Netra were all arrested.
They were arraigned and placed in judicial custody.
The statement said the detection was conducted under the leadership of Chamarajanagar District Superintendent of Police M. Muthuraj, Additional Superintendent of Police, Shashidhara MN, Deputy Superintendent of Police Sneharaj, Superintendent of Police Jagadish and Sub-Inspector of Police R. Manjunath.
