On on the occasion of the 77th Republic Day Celebrations of the Indian Air Force (IAF) on Monday performed a breathtaking aerial display over the Kartavya track in Delhi. The stunning spectacle featured several distinct formations including Arjan, Varuna, Vajraang, Vijay and a dedicated Operation Sindoor tribute.
Like Republic Day After the ceremonies, the IAF flyby served as the grand finale, demonstrating the perfect synergy between pilot and technology through high-speed manoeuvres. This year’s fleet consisted of 29 aircraft — including 16 fighters, nine helicopters and four transport aircraft — operating from five separate air bases.
Tactical formations, maneuvers
A notable segment featured a lead C-130 aircraft escorted by two C-295s in “Vic” formation. In this traditional V-shaped arrangement, all aircraft maintain a uniform altitude, with the wings leveling against the leader’s horizontal stabilizer for precision. A similar ‘Vic’ formation was used by a P-8i aircraft flanked by two Su-30s.
The ‘Vajraang’ formation, consisting of six Rafale jets, highlighted the IAF’s strategic air power. This solid, dynamic display is designed to project operational readiness and military strength. In addition, the lone Rafale flew through the northern water channel at a speed of 900 km/h and maintained an altitude of only 300 meters.
After reaching the observation deck, the aircraft performed a “Vertical Charlie”. In this maneuver, the aircraft accelerates at low altitude before pulling into a steep vertical climb and performing several rapid banked turns to demonstrate its enormous engine thrust and the pilot’s technical prowess.
Tribute to Operation Sindoor
The IAF reaffirmed its commitment to air dominance by introducing the ‘Sindoor’ formation. This “Spearhead” formation included two Rafales, two MiG-29s, two Su-30s and a Jaguar. This particular demonstration was dedicated to the Air Force’s decisive actions during Operation Sindoor – the four-day military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
The operation underscored the IAF’s ability to influence military outcomes through rapid integration of new weapon systems and seamless inter-service cooperation. This high state of readiness is maintained through a “Train Like We Fight” philosophy and a strong focus on domestic maintenance and logistics.
Adding to the spectacle on earth was a 72-piece musical ensemble featuring Agniveer, who performed the rousing track ‘Sound Barrier’.
The IAF marching contingent led by Sqn Ldr Jagdesh Kumar marched in a 12×12 formation. The IAF band consisted of 72 musicians, including 57 male Agniveer and nine female Agniveer and three drummers.
The group played the tune ‘Sound Barrier’ as they walked across the presidential podium. The marching contingent of the IAF consisted of four officers (one contingent commander and three supernumerary officers) and 144 airmen.
