The smart transport system is expected to be launched by August, an official says

Chennai’s ₹530 crore Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) project, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, is expected to be fully operational by August, with infrastructure installed on major roads and intersections in the city.

The aim is to improve traffic management, road safety and public transport services through advanced technologies.

Additional Principal Secretary Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department Gagandeep Singh Bedi on Thursday inspected the ongoing work near Egmore signal on Poonamallee High Road.

Officials have been told to ensure that all major components are commissioned within the planned time frame, the press release said.

The project includes two main categories: Traffic Information and Management System for Greater Chennai Traffic Police and City Bus System for Metropolitan Transport Corporation.

As part of the rollout, 165 adaptive traffic control signals, 50 red light violation detection systems, 10 speed limit violation detection systems, 58 traffic accident detection systems and 115 automatic traffic counting and classification units are installed across the city.

Real-time updates

The project also includes an integrated command and control center for the traffic police, 13 variable information boards providing real-time traffic information and an MTC command center.

About 3,500 buses are equipped with AVLS (Automatic Vehicle Location System), while 616 passenger information boards and 32 depot management systems are being installed to modernize bus operations.

Permissions for setting up communication network infrastructure have been obtained from Chennai Corporation and State Highways Department, while electrical connection and junction improvement work is progressing well.

Once operational, the ITS project is expected to reduce travel and waiting times, improve traffic flow, strengthen automated traffic enforcement and improve the reliability of public transport services across the city.
