At least five people were killed and ten injured in a suicide blast during wedding celebrations at the residence of a peace committee member in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Friday evening.
The district police officer of Dera Ismail Khan district, Sajjad Ahmed Sahibzada, confirmed that it was a suicide bombing that took place during a wedding celebration at the residence of peace committee chief Noor Alam Mehsud near Qureshi morr.
The guests were reportedly dancing when the attack happened. The explosion caused the roof of the room to collapse, complicating rescue operations and making access to those trapped under the rubble difficult.
A state of emergency was declared at the regional hospital headquarters.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Rescue 1122 spokesman Bilal Ahmed Faizi said in a statement that five bodies and 10 injured were taken to hospital.
He said seven ambulances, a fire engine and an emergency vehicle arrived at the scene shortly after the incident was reported, adding that a rescue operation was underway.
Authorities closed off the area and opened an investigation into the incident. According to initial reports, peace committee leader Waheedullah Mehsud alias Jigri Mehsud was among the dead.
CM Sohail Afridi reacts
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi strongly condemned the blast and sought a report from the KP Inspector General of Police.
He said those responsible would be brought to justice.
Earlier this month, armed assailants killed four peace committee members in KP’s Bannu district.
In November 2025, seven people were killed in an attack on a peace committee office, also in Bannu district of KP.
Police officials said the “good Talib”, a term used to describe a former militant who had surrendered to the state, was among those killed, and the rest were his relatives.
