Mahesh Dixit, a 1993-batch Andhra Pradesh cadre Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, has been appointed as the Director of Intelligence Bureau (DIB), a government order said.
He replaces Tapan Kumar Deka, who held the post from 2022. His term ends on June 30.
A medical doctor by training, Mr. Dixit headed the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) department and also served in Nagaland and Bihar.
He was Deputy dDirector IB in J&K from 2009-12 and Nagaland from 2012-15. In 2020, he took charge of J&K’s Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) and served there till 2024, overseeing security preparedness and intelligence-based operations after the abrogation of Article 370 in the erstwhile state. He is among the Home Ministry officials who are holding talks with civil society leaders in Ladakh.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Thursday (June 25, 2026) approved the appointment of Mr. Dixit, Special Director, IB, as the Director of the Intelligence Bureau for a period of two years from the date of assumption of charge or until further orders, whichever is earlier, the order said.
As he will retire in August 2027, he has been granted extension of service under the provisions of FR 56d) and Rule 16 (1A) of the All India Services (Death with Pensionable Benefits) Rules, 1958, the order said.
