Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh has suspended Police Inspector Jnanabharathi Ravikumar following serious allegations of negligence and dereliction of duty while investigating a murder case. Mr. Singh issued the suspension order after a preliminary inquiry found deficiencies in the handling of the case and gross negligence.
About four months ago, a case of murder was registered under the jurisdiction of the Jnanabharathi police station. However, Inspector Ravikumar allegedly did not take the case with the required seriousness and delayed the registration of the First Information Report (FIR). He allegedly tried to evade responsibility in the initial stages by claiming that the crime scene fell under Tavarekere police station limits.
Efforts were reportedly made to transfer the case to the Tavarekere police station on the instructions of the inspector. After conducting an on-the-spot inspection, the Tavarekere police clarified that the incident took place within the limits of the Jnanabharathi police station and handed the case back. This shuttling back and forth between the two stations allegedly led to avoidable delays in the investigation.
Errors in the investigation:
Even after the case came back to the Jnanabharathi police station, Ravikumar reportedly showed little interest in the investigation. Despite the seriousness of the crime, he allegedly failed to make progress in identifying the accused or gathering essential evidence. Complaints about his behavior were subsequently escalated to higher officials. After a preliminary investigation that confirmed dereliction of duty, the police commissioner ordered his suspension pending further action.
