Ecuador script stunning Germany upset to keep World Cup dream alive
For almost the entire group stage, Ecuador looked like a team waiting for their World Cup to end.
They defended well enough, created enough chances, but somehow found themselves in the final group stage without a goal and with elimination staring them in the face. Standing between them and the knockout rounds were Germany, unbeaten, scoring for free and looking one of the favorites for the tournament.
It seemed like an impossible task.
Ecuador vs Germany FIFA World Cup 2026: Highlights
But World Cups have a habit of producing nights that refuse to follow the script.
Ecuador recovered from conceding within two minutes to stun Germany 2-1 to book their place in the round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams in the tournament. At the final whistle, a stadium full of yellow shirts celebrated one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 World Cup as Germany wondered how a game they had started so comfortably had slipped away.
It was a victory built on courage and quality. Ecuador spent the first two group games looking for a breakthrough, creating chances without finding the back of the net. Against Germany, they finally discovered both their finishing and their missing belief. Every tackle was celebrated, every hit was celebrated and in the closing stages the entire Ecuadorian bench was on its feet, wanting the clock to tick a little faster.
The reward was worth the wait. Ecuador entered the knockout stages as one of the top eight teams in the tournament in third place, proving that sometimes surviving the World Cup can be just as satisfying as dominating.
FROM AN EARLY INJURY TO A COMEBACK
Germany could hardly have asked for a better start. Barely two minutes had passed when Leroy Sane raced over to give Julian Nagelsmann’s side the lead, with a lengthy VAR review ultimately upholding the goal.
Given all that Ecuador endured in the group stage, it would be easy to drop heads.
Instead, they responded with the kind of fearlessness they had lacked in previous expeditions. John Yeboah repeatedly stretched the German defence, Moises Caicedo began to dictate the pace in midfield and Germany suddenly looked far less comfortable than in their opening two victories.
The pressure eventually paid off when Nilson Angulo scored hosts Ecuador’s first goal of the tournament to spark deafening celebrations at New Jersey Stadium.
That goal changed everything.
Germany continued to dominate possession but confidence shifted. Manuel Neuer, usually so commanding, endured an unusually shaky evening as Ecuador sensed another opportunity awaited.
It came from a broken corner.
After Neuer failed to deal cleanly with the delivery, Gonzalo Plata was quickest to react and bundle home from close range. Just moments ago he missed a great chance at the far post. This time it wouldn’t go wrong.
The stadium erupted as Ecuador completed a comeback few imagined possible before kick-off.
NIGHT ECUADOR WILL NEVER FORGET
The last ten minutes felt much longer than they actually were.
Germany threw men forward in search of an equalizer while Ecuador defended with everything they had. Each clearance was hailed as a goal, each block elicited another roar from fans who sensed that history was within reach.
On the sideline, Sebastian Beccacece was barely standing still. His substitutes, coaching staff and even unused players were all on their feet as the extra seven minutes somehow felt like an eternity.
Then came the final whistle.
The players sprinted onto the pitch. Supporters hugged strangers in the stands. Some laughed, others cried, and many simply stood soaking wet in a night that seemed impossible a few hours ago.
Elsewhere, Ivory Coast’s 2-0 win over Curacao saw the Elephants qualify as Group E runners-up, while Ecuador’s famous comeback secured one of the eight places reserved for the competition’s top third-placed teams.
Germany still advance as group winners, but the story of the evening belonged elsewhere.
