Milk production in Kerala has surpassed previous figures by 10 million litres, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Minister J Chinchurani said here on Sunday. She inaugurated the Kerala Dairy Expo organized as part of the state Ksheera Sangamam. “Domestic milk production is increasing. In many places, farmers first supply milk locally and supply the surplus only to Milma. To solve the lack of accurate data and calculate the real increase in production, a survey has been launched. This survey will help determine the exact volume of milk produced by each dairy farmer,” the minister said. She added that special milk production programs have been put in place for workers in the plantation and fishing sectors to help them overcome temporary labor crises. “A subsidy of up to ₹1,000 has been approved for each dairy under the state’s extreme poverty eradication project,” she said.
Around 100 stalls have been set up at the exhibition, which aims to showcase innovative technologies and products in the dairy sector. Participants include various government departments, livestock feed and supplement manufacturers, veterinary drug manufacturers and the Kerala Livestock Development Board. The exhibition features vendors of milk mechanization machines, dairy equipment and stalls of financial institutions such as SBI and Kerala Bank along with various insurance providers. In addition, a company specializing in waste management solutions and Nithara, an artificial intelligence company dedicated to the dairy industry, are participating in the event.
The highlight of the fair is the stand of the Dairy Development Department, based on the theme “From Farm to Fork”. The stand extensively presents the various stages and processes that milk goes through. Using visual presentations and models, it provides a detailed explanation of milk collection, quality testing, processing, packaging and the distribution system. Another attraction is the Animal Husbandry Department stall with a display of domestic pets such as Guinea Pigs, White Guinea Pigs and Rabbits along with various breeds of poultry including Vigova, Givi and Brahma chickens. In addition, there are more than 70 different products for sale, ranging from agricultural crops, curries and foodstuffs to textiles, daily necessities and various value-added products.
