Daily passenger traffic on the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro has increased from around 35,000 to around 1.5 lakh people in the last three years, according to official figures.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the metro service up to Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar on January 11 as part of Ahmedabad Metro Rail Phase-2. The extension added a direct metro line between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

Between October 2022 and December 2025, more than 11.50 million passengers traveled on the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar Metro. In 2023, monthly passenger numbers ranged between 12 and 27 million passengers. In 2024, this number increased to 27-35 thousand passengers per month. In 2025, monthly passenger numbers exceeded 44 million passengers.

Thanks to the latest extension, Mahatma Mandir Metro Station has a direct connection to Gandhinagar Railway Station. The metro network now provides access to Akshardham Temple and Dandi Kutir. The extension is expected to be used by staff, students and daily commuters, including visitors attending national and international programs at Mahatma Mandir and students of Kadi Sarva Vishwavidyalaya.

Passenger numbers increased during major events such as IPL matches, international cricket matches and Rath Yatra, with monthly passenger numbers increasing from 1.6 to 2.1 million. A total of 4.11 million passengers traveled on the metro during the Coldplay concert held at the Motera Stadium on January 25 and 26, 2025, officials said.

With the completion of Phase 2, Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation has expanded the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro network to 68 km with 53 stations. Officials said the extension up to Mahatma Mandir is expected to reduce the use of private vehicles and traffic congestion.
