The drama competition in the HSS category of the State School Arts Festival held at the Chaldean Syrian Senior High School here on Saturday featured performances bold in vision and rich in energy.
Staged by National HSS, Kolathur, Eravi’s breathtaking opening play was set in a tribal setting and told the story of a tribal queen who rose up against invading forces. Queen Eravi refuses to bow to oppression and leads her people in resistance.
“It is a game against fascist forces,” said S. Neelambari, one of the team members. Synchronized movements, intense performances and captivating stage language reflected months of disciplined preparation.
Pokku by St. was equally impressive. Mary’s HSS, Edoor. It was a layered narrative of migration and generational change. Marrying humor with seriousness in the contemporary theatrical idiom, the play lingered as a thoughtful reminder of journeys and no return. Malayalam film songs with a folk flavor flowed seamlessly into the scenes while the student XII. class Anna Rose Denny stood out as the spirited mother.
The Model Residential School (MRS), Vadasserikkara brought to the fore the suffering of tribal communities displaced from their land, resources and traditions. Other important topics included religious fascism, immigrant issues and attacks on minorities. Each play was played to a full house, underscoring the growing appeal of school theatre.
Still, a concern was voiced in behind-the-scenes conversations: that escalating production costs are limiting participation at financially stronger schools. Many have called for supporting meaningful theater with minimal props and modest budgets to ensure that the stage remains open to all and not just those who can afford it.
