SFI opposes KSU’s demand for demolition of martyr’s pillar at Govt. Faculty of Law

A day after the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) unveiled a martyr’s pillar at Government Law College, Barton Hill, in memory of former university union president MA Sakeer here, leading to clashes between the SFI and the Kerala Students’ Union (KSU), a memorial meeting organized by the SFI at the college on Saturday (January 12) passed off without any incident.

SFI district secretary MA Nandan said the union would approach the court as there was nothing stopping the memorial from coming up in connection with the school’s upcoming 150th anniversary. The monument was built at the request of the students in cooperation with the alumni association.

The KSU blamed the SFÚ for Friday’s clashes, pointing out that it obtained a residence permit for the alleged illegal construction of the martyr’s column. The college had earlier issued a stop memorandum and four SFI activists were suspended. Despite a stay order issued by the Supreme Court, SFI unveiled the memorial and posted it on social media on Friday. The KSU said it was firm on the demand to demolish the monument.
