The Kerala High Court has rejected a request by the Kochi Corporation to extend the time frame to evict the encroachers from the ‘porambok’ by the Konthuruthy river, if necessary with the help of the police.
On December 16, the court ordered the civic body and the finance department to evict the encroachers within four months. He further directed that steps be taken to rehabilitate those who will be evicted from the affected country.
A total of 126 families lived on the “poramboke” land. The corporation recently decided to form a 10-member committee, including two councilors from the affected divisions, to represent the interests of families affected by the eviction.
The Konthurutha Action Council sought clarification on aspects such as rehabilitation and compensation. He added that families were unwilling to spend to maintain their houses, many of which were in poor condition, because of “uncertainty” on the matters.
