Vaibhav Suryavanshi broke Kohli’s record but dropped a good start against Bangladesh

January 17, 2026

Vaibhav Suryavanshi on Saturday, January 17, broke Virat Kohli’s record for most runs for India in youth ODIs during his innings against Bangladesh in the 2026 U-19 World Cup. However, the skilful Indian opener squandered a chance to get to his hundred in the match after being dismissed for 72 runs.

Suryavanshi enjoyed a meteoric rise in cricket ever since he made his mark in the IPL with a hundred for RR against GT last season. He has since made a strong impression in Youth ODIs, hitting three hundreds and five fifties at an average of over 52 and a strike rate of 157.68 in 20 matches.

The 14-year-old did not have the best of starts at the 2026 U19 World Cup. he was dismissed for two runs against USA in the first game. With this, Suryavanshi came close to Kohli’s record, needing just six to break it.

IND vs BAN, U19 World Cup 2026 Update

Suryavanshi is now behind Sarfaraz Khan who has 1080 runs. Vijay Zol leads the list with 1404 runs in his Youth ODI career.

Most runs for India in Youth ODIs:

Vijay Zol – 1404 runs
Yashasvi Jaiswal – 1386 runs
Tanmay Srivastava – 1316 runs
Shubman Gill/Unmukt Chand – 1149 runs
Sarfaraz Khan – 1080 runs
Vaibhav Suryavanshi – 1047* runs
Virat Kohli – 978 runs

Suryavanshi is missing a hundred

Suryavanshi looked to be batting on different wickets than the other batsmen as he attacked the Bangladesh batsmen right from the start. They soon lost captain Ayush Mhatre and then Vedant Trivedi in quick succession.

However, Suryavanshi continued his merriment when he hit Iqbal Hossain Emon for 15 runs in the 8th over. He reached his fifty off 30 balls and wanted to take on the bowlers more with India looking to maximize the overs. This made the Indian opener the youngest player to score a fifty in the history of the U19 World Cup.

But the Indian opener’s knock was broken on 72 when he was caught off the bowling of Emona.
