Withdrawal of changes to FCRA rules: CM

Chief Minister VD Satheesan criticized the “unilateral” change in the Foreign Contribution Rules (Regulation) (FCRA) by the Union government.

The amendment created conditions in which non-governmental organizations could not function in the country, the chief minister said in a statement. Mr. Satheesan said that one could only guess that this amendment was part of the attacks on minorities by the Sangh Parivar organizations across the country.

According to him, the amendment would wipe out non-governmental organizations that carried out socio-educational activities in the tribal areas in the north of the country as well as in the northeastern states. The government could restrict the functioning of any organization in the country at the request of the Sangh Parivar organizations.

Mr. Satheesan demanded that the Union government withdraw the amendment as soon as possible. The state leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Union Minister from Kerala should clarify their stand on the issue, he said in a statement.
