The Editors Guild of India on Wednesday (Jan 14, 2026) called on the governments of India and Pakistan to lift restrictions on news websites and restore access to cross-border journalism.
In his statement, Cech admitted that there were cases in both countries where the media overstepped the bounds of balanced and professional journalism and exaggerated misinformation.
“However, while such deviations and cases of unethical journalism need to be addressed more conscientiously, blocking all access is not the answer,” Cech said.
It said a blanket ban would not remove the underlying reality but only served to create an atmosphere of fear and distrust.
“Such bans are also contrary to the spirit of democracy and freedom of expression,” it said.
Gilda said she believes that unfettered access to news, especially between neighboring countries in South Asia, is a prerequisite for building an atmosphere of trust and understanding among the people and nations of the region.
Unfettered access to news, views, perspectives and information would help create an informed citizenry, aid dialogue and help bring peace to the region.
“Gilda calls on the governments of India and Pakistan to urgently lift these restrictions on news websites and restore access to cross-border journalism,” it said in a statement.
