In a milestone, the Roads Department placed the first decking board over the 3.2 km long under-construction flyover at Anna Salai near Saidapet, which is being built over the Metrorail tunnel.
This is the first of 132 sections that will create a flyover running from Saidapet to Teynampet, allowing motorists to cross seven junctions without having to stop for a signal. The work started on Monday evening and finished at 7am “We thought it would take longer. But we finished the job on time without disrupting traffic. We arranged for two concrete pouring machines in case one failed.”
The 30-meter-long, 16.6-meter-wide and 25-cm-thick dashboard will have a two-lane divided carriageway on top. A total of 15 tons of steel rebar and 352 tons of concrete form the bonded beam, where steel and cement concrete combine to provide the best qualities.
Official sources said they planned to lay one dashboard every other day. “We have already started receiving prefabs from various locations. Workers can only work between 12pm and 5am due to traffic. We have to consider safety, movement of heavy machinery, quality and also ensure that the work is completed on time,” an official source explained.
About 98% of the foundation work has been completed and the steel barricades have been moved for a length of 1.5 km. “Thanks to this, we were able to increase the available road width to 10 meters from the previous seven meters.”
