Two persons arrested for stealing copper coils from wells near Jolarpet
Two persons were arrested on Wednesday for stealing about 150 kg of copper coils and wires from boreholes in agricultural villages near Jolarpet town in Tirupattur.
The arrested persons have been identified as S. Karthik, 21, and V. Dhanush, 21. They are residents of Tirupattur. Initial investigation revealed that B. Umapathy, 53, a farmer, noticed the damage to the borewell on his three-acre farmland. He also noticed that the copper coils and wires in the motor assembly had been stolen. Copper coils were used as windings in electrical equipment.
Umapathy informed the Jolarpet police who reached the spot. Police said similar theft of copper wire was reported by farmers in nearby villages. Each kilogram of copper coil from electrical equipment could be sold for around ₹50-60 in the open market.
Surveillance was increased in the region’s farming villages, which had more than 350 motorized pumps and boreholes to irrigate rice fields. A case has been registered by the Jolarpet police. Special teams have been formed to nab the suspects. CCTV footage was also monitored in the region.
Later, a police patrolling team near Jolarpet nabbed the couple carrying about 10 kg of copper wires and coils and arrested them after investigation.
Police also recovered a large quantity of copper coils and wires from a hideout belonging to her. The arrested persons have been lodged in a sub-jail in Tirupattur town. A probe is underway.
