Chelsea Injury Update Ahead of FC Copenhagen Clash
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has provided a positive update on the fitness of several key players ahead of Thursday’s Conference League last-16 tie against FC Copenhagen. Defenders Trevoh Chalobah and Benoit Badiashile are set to return to the squad, while Romeo Lavia has resumed training.
The Blues have faced a challenging spell with injuries in recent weeks, particularly in the attacking department. Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu’s simultaneous fitness issues over a month ago left Maresca without a recognised striker. Defensive concerns have also mounted, with Chalobah recovering from a back problem and Badiashile sidelined since December. However, Maresca confirmed both players are ready for selection.
"Both ready," Maresca stated. "Trev, fortunately, it’s not something serious. Ben is back and has been training for the last weeks and days."
Long-term absentee Wesley Fofana made his return to the squad in Chelsea’s recent victory over Southampton but remains ineligible for the Conference League knockout stages, as he was not registered. Meanwhile, Romeo Lavia, who is also not part of the Conference League squad, has started training again.
"Wes is not in the squad but is also back," Maresca added. "Romeo has started to train with us. Slowly, we have players returning, which is important for the final push of the season."
In goal, Robert Sanchez is set to start over Filip Jorgensen for the European clash, despite being demoted for Premier League matches. Maresca emphasized the importance of the Conference League, expressing his commitment to the competition.
"From now on, all the Conference League and Premier League games are important," Maresca said. "We are going to take them one by one until the end and try to win as many as possible."
Chelsea will aim to navigate the challenges of a packed schedule and a growing injury list as they seek success in Europe and domestic competitions.
