Since “The Office,” Mindy Kaling has solidified her reputation as a powerhouse producer and writer. Her latest project, “Running Point,” is making waves on Netflix as an original series. Since its release on February 27, 2025, the show has quickly climbed into the platform’s top 10, proving to be a hit with viewers.
The series centers on Isla Gibson (Kate Hudson), who works as the coordinator of charitable endeavors for the Los Angeles Waves basketball team alongside her siblings: her half-brother Sandy, younger brother Ness (Scott MacArthur), and former player-turned-general manager Cam (Justin Theroux). When Cam becomes embroiled in a scandal, Isla is thrust into the role of team president. Despite initial resistance from her brothers, Isla proves her mettle, leading the Waves to the playoffs. Along the way, she navigates challenges with her fiancé, Leo Levinson (Max Greenfield), and leans on her best friend and chief of staff, Ali Lee (Brenda Song), as well as her newly discovered half-brother, Jackie Moreno (Fabrizio Guido).
What Do Critics Think of “Running Point”?
Critics have largely praised “Running Point.” On Rotten Tomatoes, the series holds an impressive 80% “fresh” rating, with the critical consensus highlighting Kate Hudson’s dynamic performance as the driving force behind the show. As one critic noted, “Hudson consistently delivers with her charismatic presence, elevating this entertaining series.”
Nina Metz of the Chicago Tribune applauded the show for giving its protagonist a strong moral compass, writing, “Ultimately, ‘Running Point’ works because Isla, despite leading a billion-dollar team, remains grounded in her values.” Similarly, Judy Berman of TIME praised the show for its layered characters, calling it “a comedy that balances archetypes with depth.”
Alison Herman of Variety commended the series’ ability to blend humor with a compelling narrative, stating, “’Running Point’ marries slick production with a charismatic cast. The television expertise on display is undeniable.” Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair echoed this sentiment, noting that Hudson’s charm keeps the show engaging.
That said, there were some reservations. Angie Han of The Hollywood Reporter acknowledged that while the show isn’t a “slam dunk,” it’s still a solid effort. Ben Travers of IndieWire suggested that the series could refine its strengths in a potential second season, calling it a “functional franchise with room to grow.”
The Season 1 Finale Sets the Stage for Season 2
As of now, Netflix has yet to announce a renewal for “Running Point,” but the season 1 finale leaves plenty of room for a follow-up. The episode is packed with twists: Isla’s relationship with Leo hits a rough patch, star player Travis Bugg (played by Connor Hanks) is benched for gambling, and the Waves’ playoff run ends in defeat. In a surprising moment, Isla shares an unexpected kiss with team coach Jay Brown (Jay Ellis).
The season ends with a cliffhanger: Isla arrives at her office the next morning, determined to improve the team’s performance, only to find her brother Cam—who has been leaking team secrets to the press—back in her chair, declaring his return. This sharp twist sets the stage for a potential second season, leaving fans eager for more.
Season 1 of “Running Point” is currently streaming on Netflix.
