Shubman Gill surpasses Virat Kohli in ODI rankings, Root reigns supreme in Tests
India captain Shubman Gill climbed three places to No. 2 in the ODI batting rankings on Wednesday, June 24. Fresh from his first ODI series win as captain of the Indian team, Gill moved ahead of Virat Kohli, who missed the three-match series due to injury.
Gill now has 791 rating points and is within touching distance of Daryl Mitchell who is 24 points ahead of the Indian batsman.
Shubman Gill’s teammate Ishan Kishan jumped a whopping 21 places to move to 43rd in the ODI batting rankings after his consistent performances in the three-match series.
Meanwhile, England batsman Joe Root, who captained his team in the second Test against New Zealand in the absence of Ben Stokes, climbed to the top of the Test batting rankings, dethroning teammate Harry Brook. Root recently became only the second batsman in the history of Test cricket to cross 14,000 runs, only behind the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. The England batsman is now a touching distance ahead of the former Indian cricketer – widely regarded as the greatest batsman in the sport’s history.
There was also a significant movement in the bowling rankings. India’s bowling trio of Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna and Washington Sundar made remarkable gains after a clean sheet against Afghanistan.
Arshdeep climbed 16 places to 22nd, Prasidh moved 34 places to joint 58th, while Washington jumped 17 places to joint 71st.
HENRY EQUAL TO JASPRIT BUMRAH
With New Zealand leveling the three-match Test series against England at 1-1, there has been a big shift in the ICC men’s Test rankings. New Zealand pacer Matt Henry climbed to the top of red-ball cricket after his 11-wicket haul in the second Test against England. The 34-year-old now shares the top spot with India’s Jasprit Bumrah.
Bumrah had held on to the number one spot since he overtook Kagiso Rabada in November 2024, but Henry’s match-winning performance helped New Zealand level the series and put him on top.
Henry joins the exclusive New Zealand list alongside Jack Cowie, who first achieved the feat in 1947, and the legendary Richard Hadlee, who dominated the chart from 1984 to 1990.
Henry’s current rating of 870 is also among the highest by a New Zealander in Test cricket. Only Hadlee, who achieved 909 rating points in 1985, and former captain Kane Williamson, who peaked at 919 batting points in 2021, have achieved higher ICC ratings.
