Heavy downpour in Mumbai, IMD issues orange alert

After intense overnight rains, Mumbai woke up to heavy downpour on Wednesday (June 24, 2026), with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange alert for the city and neighboring districts, including Thane, Raigad and Palghar.

The IMD has predicted moderate to heavy rains for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar and Sindhudurg. The city recorded 195 mm of rainfall on 24 June at 08:00 from 08:00 on 23 June, with the eastern suburbs receiving 167 mm and the western suburbs receiving 208 mm.
After a delay of 13 days, Mumbai was inundated with heavy rainfall starting Tuesday (June 23, 2026) after the Southwest Monsoon hit Mumbai.
According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon advanced into the central Arabian Sea and caused rainfall in several parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Telangana and Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar.
Heavy rainfall has caused water logging at several places in Mumbai, including the Everard Nagar metro station, near the Saki Naka metro station and others. According to Mumbai Vikhroli West BMC, a retaining wall near a residential building collapsed late on Tuesday evening, why a tree was reported to fall on a car in Dadar.
