Ammonia leak death toll in Tiruvallur rises to nine

Another woman died after an ammonia gas leak at a private seafood processing and export facility in Tiruvallur district claimed nine lives on Tuesday (June 23, 2026).
The deceased has been identified as Anjila Soren from Assam. All the nine victims were women workers from Odisha and Assam.
According to a media bulletin issued by the Ministry of Health, a total of 69 people – 66 women and three men – are being treated in various hospitals.
According to the bulletin, a total of 83 people were affected by the incident.
Of the 69 hospitalized individuals, 21 were on ventilator support, 14 were receiving nasal oxygen, and 34 were stable. Five people were released after treatment.
Among those hospitalized were 16 persons from Assam, 34 from Odisha, eight from Jharkhand, three from Kerala, two from West Bengal and six from Tamil Nadu.

The remains of five victims were airlifted to Odisha on Tuesday, while the remains of the other four will be flown once all legal formalities are completed.
An ammonia gas leak was reported at a seafood processing plant in the Kannigaipair/Manjangaranai area near Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district on Sunday.
