New World #1! Sree Charani dethrones England’s Linsey Smith to top women’s T20I bowling rankings
Young Indian left-arm spinner Sree Charani has become the world number one in the women’s T20I rankings after a brilliant run in the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup. The 21-year-old climbed to the top of the ICC rankings after taking 10 wickets in just three matches, making her the tournament’s leading wicket-taker so far.Charani’s rise has been one of the biggest achievements of the World Cup. After making her international debut over a year ago, she has quickly established herself as a key member of India’s bowling attack. Recent performances against the Netherlands and South Africa have helped her overtake England spinner Linsey Smith at the top of the rankings.The Indian spinner’s biggest contributions have come in back-to-back matches. She picked up four wickets against the Netherlands in Leeds before following that up with a three-wicket haul against South Africa in Manchester. These match-winning matches earned her enough ranking points to become the highest-ranked bowler in women’s T20I cricket.While Charani moved up to No.1, England’s Charlie Dean climbed to second after taking five wickets in her first three World Cup matches. Progress was also recorded by the former top-ranked bowler Sophie Ecclestone, who moved to fourth position.The batting order remained almost unchanged at the top, with the Australian Georgia Voll holding the first place. Beth Mooney remained second while India’s Shafali Verma moved up to sixth and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur entered the top 10.In the all-rounder rankings, West Indies captain Hayley Matthews continued to lead the table ahead of New Zealand’s Melie Kerr. Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu came in at number three, while Pakistan captain Fatima Sana and Ireland’s Orla Prendergast also registered gains. South African Marizanne Kapp also enjoyed a strong week, climbing to ninth place after an impressive performance against India.
