Could IPL playoffs be played behind closed doors amid PM Modi’s challenge?

The 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) play-offs face the possibility of being postponed due to emerging geopolitical tensions in West Asia, with concerns over travel logistics and fuel consumption. The issue has sparked discussions among stakeholders as the tournament approaches the knockout stage, although no official directive has been issued by the Indian government yet.

This development comes at a time when sporting events in India are increasingly viewed through the lens of broader stewardship of national resources and international stability. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal said the league remains committed to following government guidelines if any are issued.

“So far, as far as I know, there has been no communication with the BCCI,” Dhumal told The New Indian Express. “Independent agencies may have their views on certain things, but we are accountable to the Indian government. If anything comes from the government, we will look into it and we will definitely follow the guidelines,” he added.

According to a report in TNIE, CTI Chairman Brijesh Goyal has written to Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, calling for a reconsideration of the plan, it cites fuel consumption, frequency of travel and cost-saving measures are supported at national level. CALL TO OVERFILL THE DEADLINE

“Restriction of air travel, matches without spectators and at limited venues will save millions of liters of fuel, petrol and diesel and reduce the burden on the country,” Goyal said. “Even during the pandemic BCCI was doing the same,” he added.

Goyal also highlighted the extent of travel during the tournament and claimed The IPL teams have done extensive business together air and road travel from the start of the season on March 28 and argued that schedule compression or grouping of seats could significantly reduce aviation fuel consumption.

The wider debate reflects a recurring challenge for major sports leagues in India, where global sporting calendars intersect with domestic political priorities during periods of geopolitical uncertainty, raising questions about logistics, sustainability and event management.

According to the letter, leased aircraft used by teams, such as Boeing 737s and Airbus A320s, reportedly use thousands of liters of jet fuel per flight hour, with cumulative usage across franchises reaching significant levels over the course of a season. ČOI argued that such numbers require consideration of alternative scheduling formats.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to issue any official response and the IPL organizers are expected to monitor the situation closely before making any adjustments to the playoff schedule.
