HC closes petition for association of Govt. Faculty of Law, Kozhikode
The Kerala High Court has closed a plea seeking Bar Council of India (BCI) affiliation approval for the Government Law College, Kozhikode, after noting that the college received provisional affiliation on Monday (June 22).
The lawsuit was filed by an Idukki-based lawyer who discovered that his law degree was deemed “unqualified” by the National Accreditation Commission (NCA) of Canada when he applied for higher education and legal opportunities. He claimed that the BCI approval for the five-year BA LLB course at Government Law College, Kozhikode expired in 2011. The petitioner also sought retroactive recognition of the 2011 course and validation of his law degree through legalization.
Disposing of the plea, Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas said that since the college had paid all outstanding fees to the board and fulfilled all conditions relating to the mandatory standards of education, it had been granted provisional affiliation and therefore the petitioner’s complaint was resolved. The college has also been directed to regularly maintain the standards of education as mandated by the Bar Council of India Legal Education Rules, 2008.
The court further said that the college principal should initiate the process to obtain proper affiliation without any “undue delay”.
