Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool: What went wrong with Trump’s $14.7 million project and why repairs are needed again | Today’s news

Just weeks after US President Donald Trump declared renovations to the iconic Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool complete, the project has become the subject of controversy after algae blooms, peeling coating and claims of vandalism forced authorities to prepare for another round of repairs.

The setbacks have raised questions about the $14.7 million renovation, arrests around the site and Trump’s threats of jail time for anyone accused of damaging the landmark.

What is a reflection pool renovation project?

The Reflecting Pool, located between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument on the National Mall, has undergone a major renovation ordered by Trump as part of a broader effort to beautify federal monuments ahead of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations.

The project involved draining the 2,000-foot-long pool, cleaning it and applying a new topcoat that he described as a “blue American flag” to create a cleaner, brighter look.

Trump officially declared the reconstruction complete on June 6.

What went wrong?

In the weeks following the reopening, visitors experienced significant problems.

The water in the pool created a vibrant bloom of green algae that covered the newly applied paint. At the same time, parts of the liner began to peel off and float on the surface of the water.

Photos and videos of the dilapidated pool quickly spread on social media, drawing criticism and raising questions about the quality of the renovation work.

A portion of the liner, approximately four feet square, was seen partially detached, while other damaged pieces were later observed floating in the water.

Why is the pool draining again?

The authorities have now approved another release of the Splash Pool to carry out repairs.

DC Water issued a permit allowing the pool to be drained, while contractor Atlantic Industrial Coatings said it would repair the affected parts under warranty.

The company argued that the damaged areas represented only a small portion of the seven-acre project and did not indicate a broader failure of the liner system.

Meanwhile, workers have used hydrogen peroxide, ozone nanobubbles and other treatments in an effort to control algae growth.

Why is Trump blaming the vandals?

Trump claimed the damage was caused by vandals rather than construction defects.

He claimed on social media that unknown individuals created a “300-foot gash” in the liner and illegally introduced chemicals into the water.

He described the alleged perpetrators as “sick, deranged people” and promised severe punishment.

“Please remember that there is a 10 year prison sentence for destroying or even attempting to destroy such things,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

However, officials have not publicly released evidence to support claims that the vandalism caused wider problems affecting the pool.

Were people arrested?

According to reports, at least five people have been arrested and several others cited in connection with the incidents at the Reflecting Pool.

One of those detained was former Olympian David Hearn, who said he briefly touched a peeling part of the pad out of curiosity before authorities detained him.

Hearn denied damaging the pool and said he only wanted to examine the material after noticing it coming loose.

It remains unclear whether formal charges have been brought against any of the detainees.

Federal agencies have not provided a timetable for completing the repairs, but the administration is under pressure to quickly fix the problems before the United States marks its 250th anniversary next month.
