Thammanam-Pulleppady Road: ₹ 93.89-cr. financial sanction given for land acquisition
A financial sanction of ₹93.89 crore has been given for acquiring land for Thammanam-Pulleppady Road, Public Works Minister PK Basheer said.
The project has already received administrative sanction of ₹100 crore, he said in response to a submission made by Ernakulam MLA TJ Vinod. The project is currently in the stage of publishing the land purchase notice, the minister said.
Mr. Basheer added that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared for the proposed 49.50 km long Ernakulam bypass connecting Angamaly and Aroor along the State Highway. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is taking necessary steps in this regard. The estimated cost of the project is ₹13,553.5 crore, including ₹6,183.4 crore for land acquisition and ₹6,551.1 crore for construction. The bypass is expected to ease traffic congestion on the Aluva bypass.
Traffic studies conducted by NHAI indicate that most vehicles are likely to use the new Ernakulam bypass once it is operational, thereby significantly reducing traffic congestion on the Angamaly-Edappally section of NH-544. The direction of the bypass has already been approved by the government. Mr. Basheer said he would discuss the project with the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways on July 7.
He further said that land acquisition could be started once the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways approves the DPR. He was reacting to a submission made by Aluva MLA Anwar Sadath in the Assembly.
The existing section of NH-544 from Angamaly to Edappally is a 25-30 meter wide four-lane road. Further expansion of the stretch is not possible due to urbanization on both sides. The narrowness of the Marthandavarma Bridge along the route also contributes to traffic congestion. Mr. Basheer clarified that neither the government nor the NHAI had any proposal to build a bridge or an elevated road parallel to the Marthandavarma bridge.
