He said Air India will operate direct flights between Guwahati and two cities in the United Arab Emirates – Abu Dhabi and Dubai – to position Assam’s largest urban center as a major travel and transit hub for Southeast Asia.

UAE will be the fourth country to be connected by direct flights from Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati. Other countries are Bhutan, Singapore and Thailand. The newly built Terminal 2 was named one of the most beautiful on Earth by an organization based in France.

The Chief Minister said that his next objective was to establish a direct air link with Vietnam.

He said that on June 20, the EU lifted a travel advisory for citizens of its 27 member countries that warned against traveling to Assam.

“Encouraging news from the EU has removed the stain on Assam, which has been a problem since 1979,” he said, adding that the European bloc’s decision would help boost tourism, trade ties and people-to-people exchanges between the state and European nations.
