Billionaire Elon Musk has hinted at his plans to fund Republican candidates ahead of the 2026 US mid-term elections, warning that the country would be “toasted” if Democrats regain control of Congress.
“America is toast if the radical left wins,” Musk wrote on X on Thursday (January 1).
“They will open the floodgates to illegal immigration and fraud. This will no longer be America.”
Reaction to claims that Republicans are going all-in
Musk’s comments were in response to a post by a conservative influencer who claimed the Tesla and SpaceX CEO “will fully fund Republicans to help President Trump regain full control in mid-November.”
While Musk did not directly state the extent of his future spending, his endorsement of the message signaled strong financial and political support for Republicans heading into the next election cycle.
America’s largest political donor
Musk was already the biggest political donor of the 2024 election cycle, taking in more than $290 million.
His latest post underscores his continued willingness to play a big role in American electoral politics.
Trump ties renewed in New Year’s post
Musk’s New Year’s post also included a clip of President Donald Trump patting him on the arm in November when the former head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) returned to the White House after a highly publicized spat with Trump earlier in the year.
Musk was one of Trump’s closest allies on the campaign trail and in the first months of Trump’s return to office.
Fallout over ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’
Musk has clashed with Trump over his support for the president’s spending package, dubbed the “Big, Beautiful Bill,” despite initially leaving the administration in May on apparently good terms.
During the dispute, Musk even threatened to launch his own political organization — the so-called America Party.
Targeting the GOP establishment
Musk also hinted he may fund primary challenges against Republican incumbents who supported Trump’s spending bill, setting the stage for potential infighting ahead of the 2026 midterms.
