The central government on Friday issued an X notice to Elon Musk over obscene, sexually explicit content on Grok AI. He warned the platform to immediately remove all vulgar and illegal content, especially material generated by its AI application Grok, or face prosecution under the law.
This comes amid massive outrage and after Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi wrote to Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw, raising concerns over the alleged misuse of artificial intelligence tools on social media to share inappropriate images of women through fake accounts.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has issued a notice to X’s Chief Compliance Officer for its operations in India, citing non-compliance with statutory due diligence requirements under the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the Information Technology (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Digital Media Code of Conduct) Rules, 2021.
“…X is hereby directed to…immediately remove or disable access to all content that has already been generated or disseminated in violation of applicable laws, in strict accordance with the timelines prescribed under the IT Rules, 2021, without causing any damage to the evidence,” the letter said.
The ministry also asked for a report calling for immediate compliance to prevent the hosting, creation, publication, transmission or sharing of obscene, nude, indecent and sexually explicit content through the misuse of AI-based services such as “Grok”.
The letter further states: “We reiterate that non-compliance with the…requirements should be taken seriously and may result in strict legal consequences against your platform, its responsible staff and users on the platform who violate the law, without further notice, under the IT Act, IT Rules, BNSS, BNS and other applicable laws.”
(This is a developing story. More to come)
