Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy says the Telangana government is ready to take necessary steps to effectively rehabilitate the people affected by the Musi Rejuvenation project, rejecting criticism that the government is supporting real estate business for vested interests in the name of the project.
“I have drawn a lot of flak on social media with accusations of promoting the real estate business. But the project has been taken up to further promote the image of Hyderabad as a global city. The real estate development will have a cascading effect on the development of the city which will boost business and in turn lead to job creation,” he said.
He recalled how the foundation stone laid by United AP Chief Minister N. Janardhan Reddy for Hitec town led to the mushroom growth of the area, leading to the creation of a separate town of ‘Cyberabad’. “Of Telangana’s 3.74 million population, 1.4 million – one-third – live on the Outer Ring Road (ORR). Urbanization will increase and development should keep pace with it,” he said.
The chief minister criticized the opposition Bharat Rashtra Samiti for spewing venom on projects taken up by the government, saying their opposition to the projects was evident. “The look in their (BRS MLA’s) eyes does not hide their intent against the development of the state,” he said, adding, “they have more poison in their eyes than the pollution in the Musi River.”
He was reacting to BRS member T. Harish Rao’s claim that his party would oppose any project with a negative impact on the lives of the poor. “BRS will stand in front of the bulldozers if the government intends to demolish the houses of the poor in the name of the project,” said Mr. Harish Rao.
Explaining the highlights of the ambitious project, Mr. Revanth Reddy said that the government is committed to provide maximum compensation to the affected families and is ready to build schools, health centers and other facilities for the rehabilitated families. Development projects would lead to the displacement of some people and the government has pledged to provide the necessary facilities to improve their standard of living. “We are not in favor of approving projects on the lure of commissions. Awarding contracts for contracts has been a hallmark of the BRS government,” he said.
The government worked closely with the central government to ensure maximum assistance for the all-round development of the state and “not for squeezing out of cases”. “They (BRS leaders) have no moral right to criticize me,” he claimed, recalling how the previous government had neglected the Musi Riverfront Development project and produced a Congress MLA who switched loyalties as chairman of the Musi Development Corporation.
