Carbon audit soon in Kozhikode to improve air quality
In an effort to control air pollution in the city, the Kozhikode Corporation will soon start conducting carbon audit (carbon mapping) with the support of institutions such as Center for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM) and Kerala Institute of Local Administration (KILA).
Earlier, while presenting the corporation’s budget for 2026-27, Deputy Mayor S. Jayasree had announced that the audit would be conducted at regular intervals. An initial amount of ₹ 10 lakh has also been allocated in the budget to implement projects aimed at improving air quality based on the findings of the studies.
Officials said the CWRDM has been asked to submit a detailed project report. “CWRDM has already submitted an initial proposal and now we expect them to come up with a detailed project report. Once they submit it, which is expected in the next few days, we will formulate a detailed plan to carry out the carbon audit. This will not be a one-time initiative but will be done at regular intervals,” said a corporation official.
The audit is expected to assess the city’s carbon emissions from various sectors. The findings are expected to help the civic association identify major sources of emissions and formulate targeted interventions to reduce its carbon footprint.
Officials said the audit will also provide baseline data to track changes in air quality. The data obtained during the audit is expected to support future urban planning initiatives and climate-resilient city development projects.
Furthermore, according to the draft budget, a project called “Haritha Residence” will be formulated and implemented in cooperation with civic associations. A detailed project plan will be prepared after consultation with the associations. The initiative, according to authorities, will help improve air and water quality within the company’s limits.
The budget also proposed renovating Mananchira as part of the City Beautification project and turning it into a natural urban ‘oxygen plant’.
