Two days after a large-scale drone attack on one of President Vladimir Putin’s residences, which Russia claimed was orchestrated by Ukraine, Moscow released a video showing a downed drone carrying a 6kg explosive charge. The alleged attack on Vladimir Putin’s residence was carried out on the night of December 29.
While Ukraine denies the drone attack in Moscow, Russia insists the attack came from Kiev.
The video, shot at night in the dark, showed the damaged drone lying in the snow in a wooded area. The ministry said the alleged attack was “targeted, carefully planned and carried out in stages”.
Russia did not say whether Vladimir Putin was at home at the time of the drone attack, but said the attack was launched on the night of December 28-29 at the Russian president’s home in the Novgorod region, calling it a “terrorist attack”. What did Ukraine say?
Ukraine called the accusation a “lie” and called on other countries not to respond to Russian accusations.
“Almost a day has passed and Russia still has not provided any credible evidence for its allegations of an alleged Ukrainian ‘attack on Putin’s residence.’ And they won’t. Because there is none. No such attack happened,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga said in a post on X.
European leaders have also rallied around Zelensky following Moscow’s accusations.
“We are moving the peace process forward. Transparency and honesty are now required of everyone – including Russia,” German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on social media.
The EU’s top diplomat also attacked Russia for making “baseless claims”. EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas wrote on X: “Moscow aims to derail real progress towards peace by Ukraine and its Western partners.
But Trump, who was clearly “very angry”, warned that if the attack came from Ukraine, it would not be good for peace talks.
“You know who told me about this? President Putin said early this morning that he was attacked. That’s not good,” Trump said, adding, “It’s one thing to be offensive because they’re offensive. It’s another thing to attack his house.”
“It’s one thing to be abusive because they are abusive. It’s another thing to attack his house. It’s not the right time,” he told reporters.
