A fire broke out in two coaches of the Tata-Ernakulam Express near Elamanchili in Andhra Pradesh’s Anakapalli district early on Monday, December 29, railway officials said. The locomotive pilot immediately brought the train to a halt, allowing the passengers to evacuate quickly.
Railway authorities said one carriage was engulfed in flames during the incident. Anakapalli Superintendent of Police Tuhin Sinha confirmed that one passenger died in the fire while further details on the cause of the fire are awaited.
Officials said they received information about the fire at 12:45 p.m.
An official told reporters that there were 82 passengers in one of the affected carriages and 76 in the other when the train caught fire. “Unfortunately, the dead body of coach B1 was found,” the official added.
The deceased was identified as Chandrsekhar Sundaram.
The two damaged coaches were disconnected from the train which proceeded towards Ernakulam. Passengers in damaged cars will be sent to their destination.
Two forensic teams are working to determine the cause of the fire, a police official said.
