Former Australia captain Mark Taylor believes Cameron Green’s lack of confidence is the reason behind his poor run in the ongoing Ashes 2025 series. Green has scored just 112 runs in the four matches he has played so far with an average of 18.66 and a top score of 45. The all-rounder has just three wickets to his name as his place has come under the scanner.
With Beau Webster waiting on the sidelines, Green must step up to cement his place on the Test side of Australia. Taylor said there was no doubting Green’s talent, but said he had to continue to perform to stay on the sidelines.
“He’s a talent, there’s no doubt about that and he’s shown us at various times in his Test career that he can produce with bat and ball and he’s a great fielder as well,” he told 2GB.
“But you have to continue to perform in this game, that’s the bottom line and it hasn’t been a great series for him at this point.
NERVOUS IN GREEN?
Taylor pointed out how Green was unable to capitalize on the starts he got at the Gabba and during the MCG Test where he wore himself out. The former Australian captain feels that there is a jitters in the all-rounder at this point and he needs enough time against quality opposition to settle down.
“His two best chances were at the Gabba when he made 45 and then backed off because he thought he was going to get a short ball and the bowler ended up aiming for the stumps and got bowled, which didn’t look very good.
“And then (on the first day at the MCG) he looked as good as anyone on a pitch that was doing a lot and then he wore himself out, there’s that nervousness you feel with Cameron Green.
“Faith is not quite there – he needs a lot of time against quality opposition to be that man, not so much to keep us happy but to get his mind right,” Taylor said.
The final Test of the Ashes series at the SCG will begin on January 4, 2026.
