US flight cancellations: Post-Christmas travel plans are being hit hard by hundreds of US flight cancellations and delays as several airlines cut service across the US amid severe storm warnings for large parts of the country.
Thousands of flights were canceled or delayed in the US on Friday as the main holiday season saw millions of travelers struggling to reach their destinations.
As of 9:03 p.m. ET, as many as 2,057 flights have been canceled, according to the latest data from flight-tracking website FlightAware.
As many as 26,753 flights have been delayed due to winter storm warnings in the US, the website said.
New York’s three major airports — LaGuardia, JFK and Newark — were hit hard by flight cancellations and delays. Boston, Detroit and Philadelphia airports also experienced service disruptions due to the US weather warning, with several flights canceled or delayed.
How many flights in the US will be canceled tomorrow?
According to FlightAware, up to 130 flights were canceled on Saturday, December 27 due to winter weather warnings.
In addition, 319 flights within, to or from the United States have been canceled tomorrow.
Delays and cancellations are expected to increase if winter storms continue to dominate the U.S. weather.
National Weather Service Issue Alert
The National Weather Service predicted an “atmospheric river” to roll across California through Friday, accompanied by persistent and heavy rain, gusty winds and heavy mountain snow.
The Cascades and Rockies are also expected to experience heavy snowfall that day.
“A wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow will cause hazardous travel conditions in the Great Lakes region into the northern Mid-Atlantic Ocean and southern New England today through Saturday morning. Areas of tree damage and power outages are possible,” it said.
