Shivank Avasthi, a 20-year-old Indian PhD student, was shot dead near the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus. Canadian police became aware of the shooting incident when they received a call at 3:30 p.m. on December 23.
The shooting happened near Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road. Shivank Avasthi was pronounced dead at the scene when paramedics arrived. He died of a fatal gunshot wound.
Shivank Avasthi, a student at the University of Toronto Scarborough, was in his third year. The death of Shivank Avasthi, a life sciences student, is the 41st homicide incident in Canada this year. The search for the fugitive shooter continues. The gunman opened fire in broad daylight and fled the scene soon after.
The Indian Embassy in Toronto announced the tragic news of Shivank Avasthi’s death via a post on X. The Consulate General of India said, “We express our deep concern over the tragic death of a young Indian PhD student, Mr. Shivank Avasthi, in a fatal shooting near the University of Toronto Scarborough campus.”
The post added: “The consulate is in contact with the bereaved family at this difficult time and is providing all necessary assistance in close coordination with local authorities.”
The university issued a series of notices to its X account regarding the temporary lockout following the shooting. Although the restrictions have been lifted, “Highland Creek Valley Roads remain closed. Avoid the valley until TPS reopens the area,” the university said.
