Mohammed Shami acquitted in check case filed by wife Hasin Jahan

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has received relief in the bounced check case, with an Alipore court acquitting him of charges filed by his wife Hasin Jahan over a bounced check worth Rs 1 lakh. The case was pending in the Alipore Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court for the past four years. On Wednesday, the court ruled that the charges against Shami could not be proved.

The case dates back to 2018, when Hasin Jahan alleged that Shami issued her a check worth Rs 1,000 for household expenses, which later bounced after being deposited in a bank. Subsequently, she turned to the court. In addition to this case Hasin Jahan also filed several complaints against Shami and members of his family under various criminal provisions.

Shami appeared in court on Wednesday. Speaking to reporters after the sentencing, he said: “I knew the verdict would be in our favor because I had done nothing wrong. I paid every penny I had to pay.”

He added: “Whether on or off the field, I always try to handle every situation as best I can.”

Shami currently represents Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL but has remained in the headlines in recent years due to ongoing personal and legal disputes.

Referring to the difficulties he faced in his non-cricket periods, Shami said, “Not everything is under one’s control. Still, I keep trying.”

Legal battle between Shami and Hasin Jahan over maintenance and alimony continues. According to the Calcutta High Court’s directions, Shami is currently paying Rs 1.5 million per month to Hasin Jahan and Rs 2.5 million for the care and upbringing of their daughter – a total monthly maintenance amount of Rs 4 million.

Hasin Jahan later approached the Supreme Court arguing that the amount was insufficient to cover household expenses. The Supreme Court issued notices to both Shami and the West Bengal government. During the proceedings, the court also questioned whether Rs 4 million per month was insufficient to maintain the mother and daughter.

Reports suggest that Hasin Jahan continues to stay at Shami’s residence in Kolkata, frequently traveling between Delhi and Kolkata for her daughter’s education. Meanwhile, Shami spends most of his time in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh when he is not busy with cricketing commitments.

While the maintenance dispute continues, Wednesday’s verdict in the check bounce case is a significant legal relief for the Indian fast bowler.
