Spain responded after Cape Verde’s disappointment
Spain came into the match under pressure after a frustrating 0-0 draw with Cape Verde in their tournament opener. Despite arriving as reigning European champions and one of the World Cup favourites, La Roja struggled to find a breakthrough, raising questions about their attacking sharpness and more importantly the clash with Saudi Arabia.De la Fuente responded by returning Yamal to the starting eleven and the teenager immediately provided Spain’s spark was missing. The breakthrough came early on when Yamal showed determination to slide in at the back post to convert Mikel Oyarzabal’s cross to open the scoring and record the first World Cup goal of his career.

Oyarzabal, who endured a tough game against Cape Verde, responded impressively by scoring twice, while Saudi Arabia’s Hassan Al Tambakti added an own goal after deflecting Marco Cucurello’s volley into his own net as Spain cruised to a 4-0 victory. The result took La Roja to four points from two games and left them in a strong position to reach the knockout stages ahead of their final group game against Uruguay.
Yamal achieves the World Cup dream
Apart from the result, the match had huge personal significance for Yamal as it was his first start at the World Cup and he marked it with a goal.“It was very special, I’ve always dreamed of being in the World Cup and being able to score in the first game as a starter, that’s a dream,” said Yamal.“Another World Cup I’ve been watching in class and to be able to score here with my mum and family watching is a dream come true.”

His goal secured an entry in the World Cup record book. At 18 years and 343 days, Yamal became the seventh-youngest goalscorer in the tournament’s history, moving him just ahead of Lionel Messi on the all-time list. PelĂ© remains the youngest goal scorer at the age of 17 years and 239 days.
Why was it taken down?
Despite being arguably Spain’s best player in the first half, Yamal was substituted alongside Oyarzabal at the break. The decision surprised many supporters, but Yamal confirmed that it was purely tactical.“It was a plan to go out halfway and rest, but above all to help the team,” he explained. With Spain already three goals up at half-time, De la Fuente decided to manage the workload of two key attacking players and ensure they remain fresh for the challenges ahead, especially the upcoming clash with Uruguay.Yamal also revealed that Spain were motivated by the frustration of the opening draw.“The first game was something that wasn’t us, it was different, but we’ve arrived and we’re getting ready for the next one.“To draw a game that we know you have to win hurts us, it made us think a lot, to come to this game the way we wanted to.”Spain now head into their final group game full of confidence, with Yamal fit, refreshed and central to their hopes of making a deep run at the 2026 World Cup.
